About this book

On Christmas morning, twenty-two-year-old Diana Mallory watches the dawn from her newly acquired home, Beechcote Manor. After years spent abroad, she delights in the English countryside, the old house's panelled rooms, and the chance to make a place of her own. Yet her excitement also brings questions about belonging: she loves the landscape and its history while wondering what ties her to the people around her.

Mrs. Humphry Ward's novel follows that hopeful beginning into a more painful examination of family memory and love. Diana learns disturbing details about her mother's past, and Oliver Marsham tries to reassure her with evidence that complicates the accepted account. Their conversation reveals different needs beneath their affection: Diana returns to the suffering of her parents, while Oliver thinks ahead to their shared life and his own ambitions. Readers interested in character, social expectations, and the strain between loyalty and personal hopes will find those concerns closely observed here.
