About this book

A winter walk through flooded lanes and silent woods gives Lucian Taylor a landscape charged with mystery. Near home, an old Roman fort turns strange under a fiery sunset, and the scene returns in a disturbing dream. At school, Lucian prefers medieval Latin, unusual reading and thoughts of ancient Britain to the interests his masters encourage. The opening follows the gap between what he sees in familiar country and what his father regards as ordinary roads and weather.

Later passages set Lucian's rich inner life beside his declining health and his relatives' concern. Imagined tales and vivid sensations occupy him so completely that friendly conversation loses its meaning. In a city lodging, he sits before scattered papers and considers his writing. This novel offers readers an account of imagination taking over a life, with close attention to light, sound and the uneasy distance between private experience and everyday life.
