About this book
The text is headed BOOK EIGHTH, with an INITIAL CHAPTER titled THE ABUSE OF INTELLECT. The writer says there is at present so vehement a flourish of trumpets, and so prodigious a roll of the drum, whenever people are called upon to throw up their hats. The text says intellect may be perverted in a man of evil disposition, and sometimes merely wasted in a man of excellent impulses, for want of the necessary discipline, or of a strong ruling motive. The text reports Dr. Arnold saying, from his experience of a school, that the difference between one man and another was not mere ability but energy.
Randal's sister Juliet springs up and throws her arms round her brother's neck, and the text says Randal's strongest human affection was for this sister. A visitor takes out a card from an embossed morocco case and presents it to Randal. The text says Lord Spendquick was usually esteemed a gentleman without three ideas.
