About this book
Joan Fairburne's first New York social season has already begun to bore her when Dicky Burnett starts taking his feelings seriously. Wealth gives Dicky an easy place in his father's manufacturing company, but he sees little reason to learn the work behind it. His hesitation over proposing to Joan sits beside a broader question about what either of them wants from a comfortable life. Frederick Orin Bartlett brings courtship, family expectations and the habits of the wealthy into the same conversation.
The factory scenes give that question a practical setting. Joan helps unpack equipment, then insists that the absorbed Devons stop for lunch before he exhausts himself. Mixing kettles and unfinished machinery stand beside the opening's dances and club visits. The novel offers readers a social romance shaped by enterprise, class and the difference between having a position and finding something worth doing.
