About this book
Maltravers argues that the pursuit of literature stands apart from the ordinary objects of life and that a person cannot command the enjoyments of both. De Montaigne disagrees and says a country house eighty miles from the capital, without wife, guests, or friends, cannot provide a fair test of that possibility. De Montaigne sees a brave career before Maltravers and refuses to let him halt at its onset.
A young man gives thanks for approaching a town after wandering through morasses during the night and declares himself safe. The young man recognises a weary girl on the road as his preserver from the previous night. Maltravers climbs the stairs of a lonely house in intense cold and sinks into a chair with a suppressed groan.
