About this book
My Schools and Schoolmasters, or The Story of My Education, is a book by Hugh Miller. Hugh Miller is also named as the author of The Old Red Sandstone and Footprints of the Creator. The contents list gives chapter summaries such as Cromarty Grammar School, Uncle Sandy as a Naturalist, and Earliest geological researches.
The narrator reports being born, the first child of a marriage, on the 10th day of October 1802, in the low, long house built by a great-grandfather the buccaneer. The narrator recalls seeing, in a father's little garden, a minute duckling covered with soft yellow hair, growing out of the soil by its feet. The text says the true fishes differ considerably in the group on the opposite sides of the island, with the haddock and whiting greatly more common on the east coast, the hake and horse mackerel very much more abundant on the west, and the herring of the west coast a short, thick, richly-flavoured fish.
