Leading Articles on Various Subjects is a volume by Hugh Miller, edited by his son-in-law, the Rev. John Davidson, in a fourth edition. The preface says the present volume is issued in compliance with the strong solicitations of many, to whose desire deference was due. The preface says that, in selecting the articles, one consideration was the necessity for reproducing the mature opinion of a great mind, upon great subjects.
One article says there were even rumours afloat that our schoolmasters were on the eve of being ordained. A passage says the Presbyterian Church has as much right to institute prelates as to ordain pedagogues. The writer states that until a distinct pledge be given that there shall not be so much as a single new charge sanctioned until the yearly dividend amounts to at least a hundred and fifty pounds, we must despair of the Sustentation Fund.
