About this book
Mysteries of the Libyan Desert, by W. J. Harding King, F.R.G.S., is described on its title page as a record of three years of exploration in the heart of that vast and waterless region. The title page mentions the Gill Memorial awarded in 1919 by the Royal Geographical Society, and lists 49 illustrations and 3 maps. A verse credited to Kipling, The City of Brass, begins In a land that the sand overlays, the ways to her gates are untrod.
The text introduces a man who looked about sixty years old and said his name was Qway Hassan Qway. The text says Guide is perhaps hardly the correct term to describe the capacity in which the man was expected to act, for he did not even profess to have any knowledge of the desert beyond the Egyptian frontier. In the text a man unknots a corner of his handkerchief, takes out two or three more cartridges, lays them all on the table, and says to count them, as they are all there. A list of specimens records, among others, Reduvius palliles from Meir, Dirut, Egypt, 18/3/12 and Dermestes frischi from Bu Gerara, Libyan Desert, 2/4/12.
