About this book
Alexandria: A History and a Guide is E. M. Forster's book about the city of Alexandria, printed in 1922. Its preface says the book has two parts. The History sets out the activities of Alexandria over the two thousand two hundred and fifty years of her existence, and the Guide describes places in the city and its suburbs.
In one passage Arius and Athanasius, two clergymen who were both natives of Alexandria, are set side by side, and Athanasius appears as a small boy playing at baptism on the beach. The guide pages name a white marble column with an inscription for Sir Ralph Abercrombie and the men who fell at the battle of Alexandria in March 1801, the Mosque of Sidi Gaber, the hill of Abou el Nawatir with an old gun left from July 1882, the suburb of Ramleh, and the Old Protestant Cemetery with the tomb of Henry Salt.
