About this book
Mythical Monsters is by Charles Gould, member of the Royal Society of Tasmania and late geological surveyor of Tasmania, with ninety-three illustrations. The preface thanks many gentlemen who assisted either by affording access to their libraries, or by furnishing or revising translations from the Chinese. The text says that the Greek, the Celt, and the Viking, descended from the same Aryan ancestors, though all drawing from the same sources their inspirations of religious belief and tradition, quickly diverged.
A quoted account describes three wells in the Ang-shan mountains, a hundred li from the town of Kuei-hai, one of them on the mountain top in a spot seldom visited, and says that it has long been handed down that a dragon inhabits this well. The text mentions the reputed presence of a ruined city in the vicinity of the populous city of Nanking, at some distance from the right bank of the river Yangtsze, with those in the vicinity professing to have lost all record of its history.
