About this book

Dragon designs on marble columns, imperial furniture and bronze instruments introduce a study of Chinese beliefs through their visible forms. In The Chinese Dragon, L. Newton Hayes examines the creature's place in art, folklore and religious life. The contents move from ideas about its origins and appearance to varieties of dragons, accounts of sightings and comparisons with Western mythology. Illustrations and their captions connect the discussion to particular objects and places, including the Confucian temple at Chufu.

One chapter records conversations with teachers, a school servant and an artist who described encounters with dragons in Shantung. These passages preserve the reported encounters in considerable detail, from weather and crowds to the treatment of the creatures.
