About this book
The preface describes a short visit to the Philippine Islands, with constant contact with authorities and a friendly reception from natives of every class. The description of better-class houses in Manila says they are usually rectangular, with a central court surrounded by shops, warehouses, stables and other offices, and families occupying the first floor. The description of rooms records sliding windows admitting daylight through small panes of semitransparent oyster-shells, with Venetians for ventilation and protection from the sun.
The account of Capiz describes extensive low-lying plains producing abundant rice, although irregular mountain chains break the southern and western portions. The description of the salacot says many use the head covering against sun and rain, while the writer finds it too heavy for convenience.
