About this book

Volume 9 of Myths and Legends of Our Own Land by Charles M. Skinner carries the heading As to Buried Treasure and Storied Waters, Cliffs, and Mountains. The contents name sections such as Kidd's Treasure, Monsters and Sea-Serpents and Lovers' Leaps, among others. The text calls Captain Kidd the most ubiquitous gentleman in history and says that, if his earnings in piracy were frugally husbanded, he has possibly left some pots of money in holes in the ground between Key West and Halifax.

The text names Appledore, in the Isles of Shoals, as another hiding-place, and says Kidd put one of his crew to death that he might haunt the place and frighten searchers from their quest. A legend says Crater Lake, Oregon, was a haunt of water-devils who dragged into it and drowned all who ventured near. The text says God dwelt on Mount Washington, and that an angered deity condemned an intruder on this high and holy ground to wander for ages over the desolate peaks.
