About this book
The phantom of Bogue Holauba is by Charles Egbert Craddock. Gordon never forgot the sensation he felt on first beholding something at midnight, when the moon was large and low and the Mississippi lay unshadowed, solitary, silent as always. Gordon, who could not restrain his wonder, calls out to the servant paddling the canoe to ask what is over there on the bank of the bogue.
The servant starts, lets the paddle slip from his hand, and says he will not paddle the boat for a ghost-seer. A woman with lustrous golden hair and large, well-opened, dark blue eyes asks Gordon why he did not ask Mrs. Keene for her husband's keys. In a talk in which Geraldine takes part, a speaker says that a man leaves it to Mr. Gordon as his kinsman, solicitous of the family repute, to judge whether this confession should be made public or destroyed.
