About this book

The narrator travels far from home under the spell of the eastern sea, hearing waves pound the rocks in the twilight beyond a hill. The narrator follows the call of ancestral fathers through new-fallen snow toward an ancient town that has often appeared in dreams but has never been visited. The narrator's people once kept a forbidden festival in the sea town and commanded their sons to repeat the observance once every century to preserve primal secrets.

Kingsport appears in the gloaming with snowy roofs, wharves, bridges, graveyards and winding streets beneath a central peak crowned by a church. The narrator waits until the crowd and its stragglers have entered a black doorway, determined to be the last despite an old man's tugging. The narrator describes dreams filled with terror because of phrases the narrator dares not quote.
