About this book
An overlooked ear of corn speaks from a field, and a prairie mouse prepares for winter with a bag made from a discarded snake skin. These small encounters open Marie L. McLaughlin's collection of Sioux folklore, where plants and animals take part in human concerns. The stories move between everyday work, family affection and supernatural events. In her foreword, McLaughlin explains that she learned the language early and recorded accounts told by older Sioux men and women.
Later passages introduce a figure who embodies thunder and lightning, as well as Chaske and Hake, two friends whose bond crosses a difference in family wealth. Short tales and legends give the collection a varied rhythm, with practical lessons alongside wonder. Readers interested in Dakota storytelling can find examples of how friendship, care for food and relationships with the natural world become subjects for narrative.
