About this book
Myths of China and Japan, by Donald A. Mackenzie, is illustrated in colour and monochrome after paintings and photographs, and includes a picture called The God of Thunder, taken from a Chinese picture in the John Rylands Library, Manchester. In one section the author writes that progress has its origin in Mind, quoting Sir James Frazer and Professor G. Elliot Smith, who says that progressive societies are rare.
Numbered notes cite the Rigveda, the Bhagavad-Gita and Dr. Legge's Taoist Texts, and one note says that the Egyptian gods Ra and Ptah similarly emerged from cosmic eggs. A passage on Japan tells of the Kusanagi sword, said to put an entire army to flight; the Emperor Go Shirakawa calls for it, and a search is made in the temple of Kamo, where it was supposed to be in safe-keeping.
