About this book

Billy finds that falling in love makes prairie work almost impossible. His new neighbor Nancy MacIntyre occupies his thoughts, while Jim Johnson's visits stir a jealousy that soon turns into a fight. Written in rhyming stanzas and a colloquial frontier voice, Lester Shepard Parker's narrative poem places courtship among plowing, horses, dugouts and country dances on the Kansas prairie. Nancy's family's sudden departure leaves Billy with memories of their evenings together and news of a stolen horse.

The action takes on a different urgency when Nancy holds off pursuers while her family struggles to move its wagon across a creek, and Billy faces a return through blizzard conditions. Published in 1910, the poem combines romantic longing with the practical dangers of frontier travel. Its interest lies in the contrast between Billy's awkward, sometimes comic account of love and the harsh landscape that tests his determination.
