About this book
The Life of Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson is by Nellie Van de Grift Sanchez, who says in the preface that she first set out to tell the life story of Mrs. Robert Louis Stevenson. The preface prints a letter from Mr. Bruce Porter, an old friend of the woman whose life story is told, saying that the author's sister dismissed as impossible the suggestion that she set down the incidents of her life.
The book quotes a recollection of a little hamlet where the writer was born, through which ran the National Road like a great artery. The book says that on the last trip from Sydney Mrs. Stevenson had brought all sorts of seeds with her and went about the place dropping them in wherever she thought they would grow. The text says the bright star of her character, shining above all other traits, was her loyalty, the staunch fidelity that made her cling through thick and thin to those whom she loved.
