About this book
The study describes cottonmouth activity as hot weather approaches, when basking occurs mainly in the morning and evening and activity becomes primarily nocturnal. The account says cottonmouths feed actively in the daytime in well shaded, moist forests. The discussion identifies food availability as an important influence upon activity.
Allen and Swindell are cited as saying that moccasins congregate around drying ponds, feed on dying fish until full, and then usually stay nearby as long as food remains. The observations near Nacogdoches, Texas, describe many cottonmouths travelling daily between a swamp and a dry field, evidently to feed on rodents inhabiting the area.
