About this book
The study illustrates a juvenile turtle's central scute and the layers of epidermis formed in successive seasons of growth. The shell discussion associates major growth rings with hibernation, while minor rings formed during the growing season do not result from a new epidermal layer. The growth study reports that wear usually obliterated growth rings on parts of one or more shell plates, even in young specimens. The abdominal plate was selected for study because of its length, greater symmetry and flattened form.
Turtles observed feeding under natural conditions lunged at moving objects with one or two short steps and a thrust of the head. Turtles kept in the observer's home could quickly intercept a slowly rolled grape after being conditioned to hand-feeding.
