About this book

Vernon Stauffer's New England and the Bavarian Illuminati was submitted in 1918 as a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in political science, and the title page names him as Dean and Professor of New Testament and Church History at Hiram College. After an introduction, Chapter I is called The Undermining of Puritan Standards and Institutions, with sections on the rapid disintegration of Puritanism after the Revolution, discontent with the Standing Order, and alarms due to the spread of religious radicalism and scepticism. Chapter II is titled Political Entanglements and Hysteria.

One passage quotes Cotton Mather's Ratio Disciplinae on the solid character of religious opinion in the churches of his generation. A later passage records tales of plots put before the public while the controversy over the Illuminati broke out, among them one about agents of the French Directory and one about a tailor in Philadelphia. The footnotes are numbered from 1 to 988 and placed after the text.
