About this book
New Ideals in Rural Schools is by George Herbert Betts, a professor of psychology at Cornell College, Iowa. The contents list chapters titled The Rural School and Its Problem, The Social Organization of the Rural School, The Curriculum of the Rural School and The Teaching of the Rural School. The editor's introduction says the rural schools have suffered too long from neglect, and that both the local communities and the State have overlooked the needs of the rural school system.
The text describes schools as great education factories set up at public expense, with the children of succeeding generations as the raw material. The text says that under the newer definition education may include all these things, but it must do more: it must relate itself immediately and concretely to the business of living. The text says the curriculum of the rural school must contain the basic subjects that belong to all culture.
