About this book

College Teaching, with the heading Studies in Methods of Teaching in the College, is edited by Paul Klapper, with an introduction by Nicholas Murray Butler. The text says the book aims to make the college teacher effective in handing down this heritage of knowledge, rich and vital, that will develop in youth the power of right thinking and the courage of right living. The text says that in 1847 Yale established a department of philosophy and the arts for scientific and graduate study leading to the degree of bachelor of philosophy.

The text says the greatest impetus to the establishment of graduate schools in the American universities was made by the establishment of Johns Hopkins University in 1876. The text says that as this change in the American newspaper came between 1860 and 1880, the public demand came for the vocational training of the journalist and experiments in obtaining it began. An outline in the text lists, among other points, Franco-Prussian War and the Third French Republic, Russian Revolution, 1917, and Woman suffrage.
