About this book
The Recitation is a book by George Herbert Betts. The contents list, among others, gives chapter titles The Purposes of the Recitation, The Method of the Recitation and The Art of Questioning. An editor's introduction says that teachers are not always clear as to what they mean when they speak of the recitation.
The text says the teacher has two great functions in the school, one of organizing and managing, the other of teaching. The text says that teaching goes on chiefly in what we call the recitation. The text says a desirable rule for the teacher to set for himself would be so to prepare for the recitation by mastery of the subject, and by lesson plan or outline. The text calls it a safe rule not to repeat assignments for the benefit of careless or inattentive pupils.
