About this book
New Ideas for American Boys; The Jack of All Trades is by Daniel Carter Beard. In a chapter headed The Back-Yard Zoo, the text says the king of beasts and the royal Bengal tiger are neither of them able to inspire such universal terror among the wild creatures of the forest as does man. The text says there are but few poisonous snakes in our country, and that in the Northern States there are but two kinds, copperheads and rattlesnakes.
The text describes an old bull-frog that the writer once owned and that would attempt to swallow anything that moved, with the exception of snakes. The text tells of a boy who, some thirty years ago, built a switchback in his back-yard and issued a number of tickets at one cent each, every ticket entitling the holder to three rides. The writer reports sometimes finding birds'-nests with a neatly laid thatch roof over the bowl and a round doorway gnawed through the side of the nest.
