About this book
Adelia Belle Beard invented, wrote and illustrated this book of simple handicrafts for children. Her foreword to mothers lists the materials: empty spools, sticks of kindling wood, wooden clothespins, natural twigs, old envelopes and newspapers. She hopes the children will enjoy making toys from them and learn to work with the supplies at hand.
The instructions come through two children, Polly and Donald. In one passage Polly threads pinwheels onto a long cotton string, tying a knot above and below each wheel, and tries them at the window in the wind. In another she draws a wheel with six buckets between two disks, and Donald corrects her words. Elsewhere the two look up in a book how tall a giraffe is, and a caption gives patterns for cutting it out. Figures are marked in the text.
