About this book

New Word-Analysis, or School Etymology of English Derivative Words, by William Swinton, comes with practical exercises in spelling, analyzing, defining, synonyms, and the use of words. The preface calls the text-book a new-modeling and rewriting of Swinton's Word-Analysis, first published in 1871. The preface says the older book, while valuable as a manual of methods in the hands of teachers, is deficient in practice-work for pupils.

A suffix is defined as a significant syllable or syllables placed after and joined with a word to modify its meaning. A rule of spelling says the final e of a primitive word is dropped on taking a suffix beginning with a vowel, as in blame + able = blamable. A list of terms defines syntax as that division of grammar which treats of the relations of words in sentences, and tense as a grammatical form of the verb denoting the time of the action or event.
