About this book
Orthography, by Elmer W. Cavins, is prepared for teachers and pupils who use the Illinois State Course of Study. The preface says three fifths or more of the work is word analysis, which teachers as a rule are unable to teach without the aid of a text. The seventh and eighth years' work of the State Course of Study gives 45 prefixes, 64 roots, and 33 suffixes, in all 142 elements or component parts of words.
To analyze a word, the directions say to name its component parts and give the literal meaning of each. An example sentence says the Centennial Exposition was held in Philadelphia in 1876, one hundred years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The book lists five other exceptions to be remembered together: argument, judgment, lodgment, abridgment and acknowledgment.
