About this book
A Handbook of the English Language is by R. G. Latham, named as late professor of the English language and literature, and written for the use of students of the universities and higher classes of schools. The contents list Part I, General Ethnological Relations of the English Language, and Chapter I, Germanic Origin of the English Language. The text quotes a statement that from the Jutes came the inhabitants of Kent and of Wight, and that from the Old-Saxons came the East-Saxons, and South-Saxons, and West-Saxons.
The text lists diminutive endings, giving bullock and hillock for Ock, and lambkin and mannikin for Kin. The text gives Et, as in trumpet, lancet, pocket, as the chief diminutive of classical origin. The footnotes say the reign of Valentinian was from A.D. 365 to A.D. 375.
