About this book

A strike is described in which the plea of the strikers was based upon the duty of the strong to the weak, and a chivalric call was issued that the standard of life might be raised to that designated as American.

The text says that at the end of eight weeks the union leaders made the best terms possible, and through these terms the skilled workers were guaranteed against a reduction in wages, but no provision was made for the unskilled. The writer says it is difficult to illustrate on a national scale the substitution of the ideals of labor for those of warfare, and ventures, at the risk of being absurd and with the certainty of pushing an illustration beyond its legitimate limits, to typify this substitution by the one man whom the civilized world has most closely associated with military ideals, the present Emperor of Germany. An eager young Italian, coming from the schoolhouse, breaks out into a description of his father's campaigning under the leadership of Garibaldi.
