About this book
The book is What Eight Million Women Want, by Rheta Childe Dorr, 1910. The dedication is to the American representatives of the eight million, the eight hundred thousand members of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The contents list chapters headed From Culture Clubs to Social Service, European Women and the Salic Law, American Women and the Common Law, and Votes for Women.
The text says women are not better than men, and that the writer hopes not to be suspected of ascribing to women any ingrained or fundamental moral superiority to men. The text says peaceful picketing is legal, and explains that picketing consists in patrolling the neighborhood of the factories during the hours when the strike breakers are going to and from their nefarious business, and importuning them to join the strike. The text says the Suffrage movement was begun in 1848 by a band of women called fanatics. The text says women are beginning to understand the situation, and even how badly the men are providing for the municipal family.
