About this book

A letter from Catherine Evers draws Duncan, a wounded veteran recovering from his injuries, back into an old friendship and an uncomfortable obligation. Her handwriting revives memories of his earlier attachment to her, while a photograph reminds him how much her son Bob has grown. E. W. Hornung tells this novel through Duncan's account, giving his observations a mixture of wounded pride, dry humour and uncertainty about his own motives.

The story moves into the world of British visitors in Switzerland, where Bob declares his intention to marry Mrs. Lascelles. Duncan discovers that his intervention has helped bring about the very decision he hoped to prevent. Private confidences leave him uncertain about what he can reveal or whom he can approach. The interest lies in these competing loyalties, awkward conversations and the gap between a young man's confidence and his older companion's troubled judgment.

Ernest William Hornung invented A. J. Raffles, the cricketing gentleman thief whose burglaries reach us through his admiring accomplice Bunny Manders. Raffles arrived in an 1898 magazine story and was collected the following year as The Amateur Cracksman, with The Black Mask in 1901 and A Thief in the Night in 1905.
