About this book

With his wedding a week away, David Gordon returns to a familiar farmhouse at Wastdale Head. Mrs. Jackson's welcome soon leads to news that Hawke, his former rival, is staying at the inn. The house also revives memories of Arkwright, a climbing companion whose death in Switzerland Gordon witnessed. A novel Arkwright wrote there makes the past especially present, interrupting Gordon's happiness at the thought of marrying Kate Nugent.

A. E. W. Mason places emotional strain among mountain paths and difficult footing. During a stream crossing, Kate takes Gordon's hand, loses her nerve and relies on his help, while reading intentions into his pauses. His distracted thoughts and her expectations pull their conversation in different directions. The romance offers a study of jealousy, remembered friendship and the difficulty of understanding someone close, with the landscape making trust a practical concern as well as a personal one.
