About this book

Nooks and Corners of the New England Coast is by Samuel Adams Drake, whose earlier books named on the title page include Old Landmarks of Boston and Historic Fields and Mansions of Middlesex. The title page says it has numerous illustrations and carries an 1875 copyright entry; it is inscribed by permission to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The contents for Chapter I, New England of the Ancients, include Norumbega River and City, Early Discoverers and Maps of New England, Penobscot Bay and Is Friday Unlucky? Chapter II is Mount Desert Island.

In one passage the writer describes the Mount Desert range, with Blue Hill and Katahdin as lone mountains, and a village resident whose answer on the origin of the mountains is two words, Hove up. He says he came to the island by steamboat from Boston to Bucksport, then by way of Ellsworth to Somesville, which he chose as a central point for his excursions. Another passage on Marblehead says the old dialect is dying out and gives the example barn in a burn for born in a barn. The text also carries numbered notes on Castin, Cape Rosier and early maps.
