About this book
A crowded train from Montreal to Portland brings Richard Gilbert, a New York lawyer, face to face with a young French Canadian passenger and her spaniel, Frollo. His offer of a seat begins an encounter that challenges his dismissive opinions about love. May Agnes Fleming uses the wintry carriage, the girl's conversation with her dog and the lawyer's distracted attempts to read his newspaper to establish the opening of Norine's Revenge.
The volume also contains Sir Noel's Heir and two shorter pieces listed in its contents. In Norine's story, Helen Thorndyke copies legal papers while her husband works on a marble figure called Deserted. Norine's meetings with him bring wounded pride and a desire for repayment into their polite exchanges.
