About this book
The title page reads The Advocate, A Novel, by Charles Heavysege. The first chapter is set on a bright day in September of the year 1800, with two persons in earnest conversation in a lawyer's office in the city of Montreal. One passage says that a man soon became the favorite counsel for the defence.
Another passage says that the relations of Seraphine Duchatel hoped that she and Claude Montigny might become inspired with a mutual liking, the prelude to their desired union. In another scene the enraged parent cries: Demon, degenerate dog, where hast thou been walking to and fro in the earth? A further sentence says that, instead of performing his long plighted vows, he sent her to a lonely dwelling on the then unpeopled Ottawa to hide her shame.
