The hive also has its rivalries. When a new Princess emerges, the old Queen faces a challenge, and the worker bees must decide whom to follow. Nuova's affection for the drone Hero makes that division personally painful, as his attention turns toward the Princess. Songs by Charlotte Kellogg accompany the story. Its combination of household tasks, royal ceremony and private attachment gives readers a way to think about community and individual wishes through the imagined lives of insects.
