About this book

Violet cares for a patch of flowers at the foot of an oak tree, painting their petals, loosening the soil and bringing them dew. At night she dances with the elves. When schoolboys rush through the forest, one boy damages the violets and knocks their tiny keeper to the ground. She tends the flowers before noticing that her wings have been torn away, leaving her unable to return to fairyland when spring ends.

An owl points Violet toward the Fire King, while a grateful glowworm lends her a lamp. The wings she receives there look like an answer, but their heat threatens the living things she wants to protect. Marianne L. B. Ker builds this children's fairy tale around small acts of care and the difference between having power and using it kindly. Talking creatures, flower fairies and an old wizard give Violet's search the shape of a woodland fable.
