About this book
Ocean Steam Navigation and the Ocean Post is a volume by Thomas Rainey, published in New York in 1858 and dedicated to the Postmaster General of the United States. In the preface the author calls it a little volume offered to the Government and the public on ocean steam navigation and the ocean post.
The contents list is long and detailed. It runs through British mail contracts from 1833 onward, including the Cunard contract of 1839, the steamer Savannah, the Sirius and the Great Western, and services to the West Indies, India, China and Australia. It sets British and American subsidies side by side and has a section on the mail lines of the United States. In the text, one passage argues that the United States should have established steam lines of its own to foster its trade.
