About this book
The title page names Basilius Valentinus as a Benedictine monk and the work as treating natural and supernatural things, along with the first tincture, root and spirit of metals and minerals. This English edition, translated out of High Dutch by Daniel Cable, appeared in London in 1671. It also adds writings credited to Roger Bacon on the tincture of antimony, John Isaac Holland on Saturn, and Alex. Van Suchten on the secrets of antimony.
One passage separates what a person can take, see and hold, which it calls natural, from what the mind comprehends, which it calls supernatural, and mentions visions seen by holy men. A chapter titled Of the Soul or Tincture of Tin describes Jupiter as holding a middle place among the metals. Another passage gives directions for melting a powder and pouring it into a mould of boxwood to make a red stone, red as a ruby.
