About this book
Old Tavern Signs, by Fritz August Gottfried Endell, presents an excursion into the history of hospitality. The preface says the author's attention was first attracted by the filigree quality and delicate tracery of wrought-iron signs in the picturesque villages of southern Germany. The discussion of hospitality recounts Abraham offering angels bread, telling his wife to bake a great loaf, and going out to kill a fatted calf and bring butter and milk.
The account identifies Monsieur de Julienne as the first possessor of a sign by Watteau and says he asked the engraver Aveline to engrave the sign with an inscription. Luther is quoted as saying that the sun would prefer to give bad fellows no gleam, and that having to shine over them is a great grief and cross.
