About this book
Sir Everard Digby's portrait opens an account of family loyalty, religious conviction and involvement in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Thomas Longueville writes as a descendant, but describes his subject as a promising man whose choices damaged the cause he hoped to serve. The biography covers Digby's ancestry, marriage and conversion, setting his life among the pressures faced by Catholics during the reigns of Elizabeth and James. Its preface explains the difficulty of balancing one man's story with the larger conspiracy.
Longueville combines references to historical authorities with direct quotations and judgments about the participants' conduct. In the countryside scenes, the conspirators gather arms at Whewell Grange, encounter rejection from Catholic households and struggle to keep their followers together in wet November weather.
