About this book
Oliver Goldsmith is a book by E. S. Lang Buckland. The preface acknowledges the writer's indebtedness in the compilation of this volume to John Forster, and says that if this little book has any merits, they are due to others, while its errors are all the writer's own. The contents list names chapters called The Best Beloved of English Writers, The Deserted Village, The Traveller and London, among others.
The text says Noll was soon taken away from the village school, and that Oliver caught confluent smallpox, with the pathetic result that a face plain to begin with grew a whimsical and winsome ugliness all its own. The text quotes verse about a village master who taught his little school, a man severe he was, and stern to view. The text records Goldsmith saying, in his quiet and reflective way, that the man is poor and honest, which is recommendation enough for Johnson.
