About this book
Ernest Newman's Wagner as Man and Artist is dated 1914, London and Toronto. Its front matter lists other books by the same author, among them Gluck and the Opera, A Study of Wagner, Musical Studies, Elgar, Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss.
One passage looks at Wagner's union with Minna, using Mein Leben and Wagner's correspondence, and describes the first picture of her as a pretty bourgeoise, modest, sensible and sympathetic. Newman sets Wagner's pleas for himself beside Wotan's words to his wife in the Rhinegold and the Valkyrie, quoting the lines. A footnote says the Ring began as Siegfried's Death, with Young Siegfried, the Valkyrie and Rhinegold added in turn. Another passage quotes a man telling Apel that he must have money, and describes him in his early years as a creature of strange contradictions, charming to those he liked.
