About this book
History of Ancient Art is a survey by Dr. Franz von Reber, director of the Bavarian Royal and State Galleries of Paintings and professor at the University and Polytechnic of Munich. This English edition was translated and augmented by Joseph Thacher Clarke, and the title page lists 310 illustrations and a glossary of technical terms. A passage speaks of applying the historic method to the study of the fine arts.
One passage takes up the Egyptian pyramids, setting Napoleon's remark about forty centuries beside the dynasty dates proposed by Lepsius and Osburn. Another describes the Erechtheion on the Athenian acropolis, a combination of several shrines built on different levels, which made a perfectly symmetrical plan impossible. A further passage turns to Roman sculpture, describing a decline into weak copies of the Hellenic tradition.
