About this book
Sculptured tombs of Hellas examines tomb sculpture, including discussion of early portrait-statues accompanied by an engraving of a statue's head. The description of the head notes long locks falling over the shoulders and hair close curled over the forehead in the decorative Ionian fashion. The description of the statue's head identifies upturned corners of the mouth as a familiar feature of the most primitive art of Greece.
The discussion identifies a fragment of an archaic equestrian statue from the graveyard of Vari in Attica as probably a memorial of a cavalier buried there. The list of illustrations includes a girl with a doll, a mother and daughter, and a lady with an attendant.
