About this book

The title page names Thomas Aquinas as author, gives the Very Rev. Hugh Pope, O.P., after him, and carries a preface by the Very Rev. Vincent McNabb, O.P. It is dated 1914. One passage tells how Aquinas lifts his hands to the Crucifix and prays over what he has written. In another, a group of students look over Paris and ask whether he would like to own it, and he says he would far rather have the homilies of Chrysostom on Matthew.

The main text treats prayer through questions with numbered objections and replies. One section asks whether sinners win anything from God by prayer; the objections quote the Gospel and Proverbs, and a reply cites Augustine. The index lists topics such as definitions of prayer, prayers for the dead, fear of death, and Denis the Areopagite on ecstasy.

About the author

Aquinas Thomas

Thomas Aquinas (about 1225 to 1274) was an Italian Dominican friar and theologian who spent his career arguing that Christian faith and Aristotelian reason belong together. Fellow students called him the dumb ox for his silence; the Catholic Church later made him a saint and its central teacher.
