About this book
George Gallie Nasmith wrote On the Fringe of the Great Fight. The front matter carries the words To My War Bride, followed by lines that begin In Flanders fields the poppies grow, Between the crosses, row on row. By eight o'clock the coast of Cornwall could be made out clearly, and instead of running for Southampton as all had expected, the party headed for Plymouth.
The text says the medical officer, of course, is attached to the battalion and goes everywhere with it, and that under him are a number of stretcher bearers who gather up the wounded. The text calls an event one of the little tragedies continually occurring in nature, and says that to the little bird-wife waiting in the cherry tree it was just as great a tragedy as would be the death of her husband to the woman waiting at home.
