About this book
Samuel Felton's second edition, published in London in 1830 with considerable additions, deals with English writers on gardening who are no longer living. The preface counts sixty-nine of them and notes that portraits have been taken of some of them. Each name comes with a biographical notice, and the title page carries lines from Shakespeare's plays.
One notice records that a Sir William was active in furnishing the British Museum garden with six hundred plants, and that his portrait was painted by Abbot and engraved by Ryder in 1791. Another passage turns to France, naming Rose, who was sent to view Versailles, and George London, along with Evelyn, Addison and Kent. A later passage mentions a horticultural society founded in Preston, in Lancashire, and the gardens of Wakefield.
